Who We Are

We live in the city of Faisalabad, home to about two million people.  Our houses are in the southern part of the city, made with brick and mortar, with flat roofs.  In the summertime, when nights are warm, we sleep on our roofs to escape some of the heat.  We have running water and electricity, but about half of the time the power is off, and our sewers consist of flows in our dirt streets which we step across if they are not too wide.

Most of us are undernourished for lack of money to buy food.  Although we pay about a quarter of our incomes in taxes, we receive few services from our government.  It is not surprising that when someone offers us a little more than we have, we go to them and comply with their wishes.  In this way many of our young men have joined the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, given assurances that they and their families will be cared for.

We at HDO are local Pakistanis, the poor ones, with a dream.  We believe that strife and marginalized living in our generation are tolerable if we can instill Hope into the next.  Hope Development in our children gives us hope, and to this end we devote ourselves.  Of course we want better attitudes, and better lives, for all the poor people of Faisalabad, including the adults, but few adults will change.  Our women are particularly underprivileged and for them we try to offer protection and empowerment to determine their own lives.  In our children we have the greatest hope.

We are a small organization, using very little donated money on overhead.  Only a small part of our budget comes from payment for services rendered. Most of it comes from donations outside Pakistan.  We have more dreams and more plans than we have money to meet.

Legal Status

HDO is registered under the societies registration Act XX1 1860, Joint Stock Companies Faisalabad Pakistan.

Vision

HDO is a community-based organization seeking to transform deprived lives through sustainable development.  Our emphases are physical, social and economic help through medicine, encouragement and training.

We seek input from the people we serve.  Our goal is to analyze a situation by discussion on social, cultural, economic, religious and political issues through group meetings and case studies.  We try to sort-out problems and arrive at solutions with community input.  No program remains fixed for very long, but changes with follow-up evaluations.  We believe that through local participation, our services are more effective and sustainable.  It is an evolving process.
